What is IES Exam?

Indian Engineering Services (IES) or Engineering Services Exam (ESE) is a competitive exam held by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit engineering graduates. Moreover, the IES exam is conducted every year by the commission for the branches of Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics & Telecommunications. So, the IES exam is conducted nationally and regarded as one of the hardest exams for fewer posts.

IES Exam is mainly conducted in two phases namely- The preliminary phase and the Mains phase in offline mode to hire the candidates. Moreover, the Preliminary exam consists of two MCQ-based papers of 200 marks, and the Mains exam consists of an illustrative paper of 300 marks.  What are the Eligibility Criteria for IES Exam?

The eligibility criteria for IES Exam are mentioned by the recruiting body UPSC for the candidates on their official websites. Candidates are required to fulfill the eligibility criteria mainly age and nationality.

  • Eligibility criteria of Age –
  1. Candidates should be of 21 years of age as of January 1, 2022. 
  2. Candidates who are born before 1st January 2000 and not before 2nd January 1991 are eligible to apply for the IES exam.
  • Eligibility criteria of Nationality-
  1. Candidates must be citizens of India, Bhutan, or Nepal.
  2. Any refugee of Tibetan origin migrated to India earlier to 01 January 1962 with permanent settlement in India
  3. Any migrated citizen from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, or East African countries of Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zaire, Malawi, and Ethiopia, came to India for permanent settlement in India.
